San Vito Lo Capo – Wreck of the Millstones

Detail

This site, devoid of ancient structures, offers a unique experience thanks to its characteristics of an ancient harbour landing. Here, on the seabed, you will find an archaeological treasure trove spanning the period from the 4th century BC to the 16th century AD.

The finds extend over about 1,000 square metres along a north-south ridge traced by the posidonia bank.

You will find about 50 to 60 rhomboidal millstones and a stone anchor, together with fragments of amphorae dating back to the 4th-5th century AD.

The millstones made of lava stone, possibly from the Etna area, add charm to this underwater discovery.
