The Municipal Theater of Syracuse, aka “Teatro Massimo”, is located in the historic center of Ortigia and was inaugurated in 1897, designed by Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda. It remained in service until 1962, when it was shut down for renovations and officially reopened in 2016.
With its majestic look, the Municipal Theater of Syracuse still features the wide porch that originally served as a resting place for carriages. The facades are decorated with masks and symbols inspired by the muses; inside, a large foyer gives access to the management, checkroom, stalls, café, and stage steps. The interior paintings and the Daphne vault are the work of Gustavo Mancinelli, the plaster decorations are by Rocco Enea and Giuseppe Lentini, and the friezes are by Giuseppe Nicolini. The main hall currently holds 500 seats.
Since 2016, the Municipal Theater of Syracuse has been offering a rich program of performances, with special seasons dedicated to “New Theater”, “Civil Theater” ,“Children’s Theater”, and “Women’s” theater.
