Catania also tells its story in silence, through an intimate and evocative itinerary that weaves together art, faith, and history in the heart of the city. It is a fascinating journey through squares and churches, unveiling precious treasures and the deepest soul of the Etna city.
The route begins at the majestic Cathedral of Saint Agatha in Piazza Duomo. The Baroque façade by Giovan Battista Vaccarini introduces an architecture where Norman rigor meets Baroque elegance. Inside, the Chapel of Saint Agatha preserves the relics of the Patron Saint, while the nearby Chapel of the Virgin houses the tombs of the Aragonese kings. The eighteenth-century wooden choir leads the eye toward the impressive fresco of the 1669 Eruption of Mount Etna, a powerful testimony of the city before lava forever changed its appearance.
Beneath the Cathedral lies a hidden world: the Achilliane Baths, an underground Roman complex where pillars and decorated vaults interact with the flowing waters of the Amenano River, evoking the atmosphere of imperial Catania.
Just a short walk away, the Museum of Sacred Art narrates devotion through masterpieces of goldsmithing and precious textiles. Among them stands out the famous Fercolo of Saint Agatha, a monumental symbol of Catanese faith that crosses the city each year during the celebrations dedicated to the Saint.
Continuing along Via Etnea, visitors reach the Basilica Collegiata of Maria Santissima dell’Elemosina, a refined example of Sicilian Baroque designed by Stefano Ittar. Beyond its concave and theatrical façade, light illuminates gilded stuccoes, altarpieces, and an exceptional art collection.
The journey ends with the Aghatine Triptych, a path rich in memory and spirituality linking Sant’Agata la Vetere, the first guardian of the relics, Sant’Agata alla Fornace and the Carcere, where medieval structures and Roman walls merge into a collective story of faith, martyrdom, and history.
