Lake Biviere of Cesarò
Detail
Lake Biviere of Cesarò, located in the territory of Cesarò (Messina), is one of the most fascinating and evocative destinations in the Nebrodi Park. Situated at around 1,278 metres above sea level, it is the most important high-altitude wetland in Sicily — an extraordinary ecosystem where water, forest, and sky blend in perfect harmony.
The lake, originally artificial but now fully naturalised, is surrounded by vast beech woods and mountain meadows, and is renowned for its rich biodiversity. Depending on the season, its waters can take on hues ranging from emerald green to deep red, due to the summer bloom of the microalga Euglena sanguinea — a unique phenomenon that colours the landscape with surreal reflections.
Here, wildlife thrives: herons, mallards, coots, and other water birds find refuge among the shores and reed beds, while nearby grow ancient trees such as the Yew of Biviere (around 500 years old), the Ash of Biviere, and the Beech of Bosco Saracina.
Lake Biviere is also a favourite stop for trekking and horse-riding enthusiasts, thanks to the trails connecting it to the Mangalaviti Forest and Monte Soro. The tranquillity of the place — broken only by birdsong and the rustling of leaves — offers an immersive and contemplative experience, perfect for those seeking authentic contact with the unspoiled nature of the Nebrodi.
