Agrigento: a millennia-old history between the Valley of the Temples and archaeological treasures

Agrigento is one of the oldest and most fascinating cities in Sicily. Founded in the 6th century BC, it has been reborn multiple times upon its ancient foundations and still preserves clear traces of the civilizations that once inhabited it.
For this reason, Agrigento is considered one of the most important cultural destinations in the Mediterranean.

The Valley of the Temples: the heart of ancient Akragas

The Valley of the Temples is Agrigento’s most iconic symbol. This extraordinary archaeological site, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, tells the story of the grandeur of Akragas, one of the most powerful Greek cities of the ancient world.
Walking among its Doric temples is like stepping back in time, surrounded by a unique landscape where classical architecture meets olive groves and the blue sea.

Among the most famous monuments:

  • Temple of Concordia, one of the best-preserved Doric temples in the world
  • Temple of Juno, majestically overlooking the hill
  • Temple of Heracles, the oldest temple on the site

Thanks to its vastness and exceptional state of preservation, the Valley of the Temples is considered one of the most beautiful archaeological parks in the world.

The Pietro Griffo Regional Archaeological Museum

Just a short distance from the Valley lies the Pietro Griffo Regional Archaeological Museum, home to over 5,000 artifacts from the Agrigento area.

Its collections allow visitors to understand the historical evolution of the city—from prehistoric times to the Roman age.
With statues, ceramics, inscriptions, and everyday objects, the museum offers an engaging and comprehensive glimpse into life in ancient Akragas.

A highlight of the collection is the Telamon, a colossal stone figure about 7 meters tall, a remarkable example of monumental Greek architecture.

Agrigento today: old town, sea, and traditions

Though famous for its glorious past, Agrigento is also a vibrant city, full of charming views and long-standing traditions.
Its historic center features medieval alleys, Baroque churches, and panoramic terraces overlooking the coast.

Surrounding villages and nearby beaches—especially the iconic Scala dei Turchi—complete the tourist offer, blending art, nature, and local flavors.

Visiting Agrigento means discovering a city that can amaze in every season, thanks to its millennia-old identity and extraordinary cultural richness.
