Geraci Siculo: the Sicilian village with the record for longevity
Detail
Did you know that Geraci Siculo is one of Italy’s longest-lived villages? This small village in the Madonie mountains, in the province of Palermo, is a must-visit destination for anyone in search of eternal youth. Steeped in a bygone era, the medieval village of Geraci Siculo is enveloped in tranquillity and breathtaking scenery. A stroll is enough to understand the secret of its inhabitants’ longevity, many of whom are in their nineties with a smile on their faces. It is no coincidence that this welcoming little village, rich in historical and natural beauty, has joined the global network of so-called “Blue Zones”: the areas of the planet where researchers record the highest concentration of long-lived people, hence its nickname “Village of the Immortals”.
What is the secret to immortality? In reality, it is a combination of factors which, when blended in just the right proportions, create an unrivalled ecosystem of physical and mental wellbeing and a healthy environment: a natural diet, social cohesion, daily physical activity, a close connection with nature and spirituality, to name but a few. You only need to have a natter with the “sprightly old folks” you meet in the bar, in the square or on their doorsteps to be convinced that, perhaps, the secret of life really does lie in the simple things. So let’s just say it: visiting Geraci Siculo is good for your health!
The “slow life” around here translates directly into quality of life. Here, time is marked by church bells and a strong sense of community: you can feel it in the streets of the historic centre, amongst ancient medieval drinking troughs such as the Bevaio della SS. Trinità; the Byzantine Castle, in a panoramic position; the little Church of Sant’Anna; and the Mother Church. The surroundings of Geraci are enveloped by the Vicaretto Wood, offering relaxing walks amidst the greenery and fresh air of the Madonie mountains. Not far away, the Church of Santa Maria della Cava, with its Basilian monastery, provides a pleasant stop for spiritual reflection.
It’s not just about artistic and natural beauty! In these parts, healthy eating, in line with the principles of the Mediterranean Diet, is effectively an ally of longevity. Among the local specialities, you can sample ancient traditional recipes, characterised by simple yet authentic cuisine: pasta with local green beans, locally sourced; tuma frìsca (fresh cheese in a savoury version with anchovies, or a sweet version with sugar), as well as heartier dishes such as the typical homemade maccarrùna with crastagnèddu (castrated lamb) ragù, finishing with serafinèddi with honey and almonds. In short, one could say that in Geraci Siculo, longevity is truly served on a silver platter! All that remains is to make the most of it, spending as much time as possible in this rejuvenating spot, perfect for a weekend away when you feel the need to switch off from stress and treat yourself to a slower pace, quality time and well-being.
