Nivarata – International Sicilian Granita Festival 2026

From 22 to 24 May 2026, the historic centre of Acireale will host the tenth edition of “Nivarata – International Festival of Sicilian Granita”, an event dedicated to one of the most beloved and distinctive culinary specialities of Sicilian tradition. Set against the backdrop of Piazza Duomo and the streets of this Baroque town, the festival celebrates artisanal granita as a symbol of history, conviviality and Mediterranean culture.

Inspired by the ancient figure of the nivaroli, guardians of the snow gathered in the mountains and stored in historic snow houses, the event traces the origins of a product that has, over time, become an emblem of Sicilian flavour around the world. The stars of the event are Italian and international master gelato makers, invited to explore the balance between tradition and innovation through tastings, live demonstrations and creations made with fresh, seasonal ingredients.

At the heart of the festival is the Don Angelino Award, dedicated to the historic master gelato maker from Acireale, whilst talks, performances and cultural activities guide the public on an immersive journey through flavours, stories and local identities. Nivarata thus stands as a sensory journey through the memory and gastronomic creativity of Sicily.
