Messina Cathedral, dedicated to Maria Santissima Assunta, is one of the city’s most important symbols and a testament to its troubled and fascinating history. Originally built in the 12th century, it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, particularly after the 1908 earthquake and the bombings of World War II. Today, the structure retains Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements, with works of art, statues, and historical monuments that recount centuries of devotion and culture.
The real jewel of the Cathedral is the Astronomical Clock in the bell tower, created by Ungerer of Strasbourg in 1933. Every day at noon, automatons, mechanical figures, and biblical scenes come to life in a grand moving spectacle that fascinates visitors of all ages. The clock is considered one of the most complex in the world and represents not only a masterpiece of engineering but also a symbol of Messina‘s historical and cultural identity. A visit to the Cathedral is an experience that combines art, history, faith, and mechanical ingenuity.
