Street art in the city center: from Caltagirone to Agrigento

Detail

Street art has found a home in Sicily, transforming neighborhoods, walls, and abandoned corners into public and shared works of art. From the center of the island to the coast of Agrigento, a journey through cities, villages, and suburbs where art and urban regeneration merge. From Caltagirone to Favara, from Enna to Licata, Sicily is colored with faces, symbols, and messages that tell the story of the present with contemporary languages and deep roots.

Caltagirone, between ceramics and murals

In Caltagirone, renowned for its ceramics, street art interacts with the historical and artistic identity of the city. In the Sant’Agostino district, at the top of the famous Santa Maria del Monte staircase, murals and graffiti adorn walls and alleys. Painted Moorish heads, hands transformed into fish, bearded giants: the entire neighborhood becomes an open-air gallery. In the Acquanova neighborhood, Ligama signs “Sorgente” (Source), a work depicting a Mediterranean woman giving water to those coming from the desert.

In Via Paradiso, the “Fiore di Fiorenza di Nettuno” (Flower of Fiorenza di Nettuno) adds a dreamlike and poetic touch to the urban landscape.

Enna, Calascibetta, and Caltanissetta: art between history and rebirth

In Enna, the WOL Public Art project transformed Porta Pisciotto into a collective installation on hospitality and travel, involving artists such as Corn79, MrFijodor, Ale Senso, Poki, and Crazyone. In Calascibetta, WOL has also left its mark with works reflecting environmental and spiritual themes: a little girl touching a tree, a woman protecting a flower under glass, a fox immersed in nature.

In Caltanissetta, the open-air gallery Eclettica collects works by artists such as Guè, Crazyone, Rosk & Loste, while in the Provvidenza district there is the blue beating heart of Igor Scalisi Palminteri, surrounded by symbolic birds and words such as ‘care’ and ‘gift’.

From Favara to Licata, passing through Agrigento

Continuing southwest, you will encounter Grotte and Castrofilippo, small towns that are home to numerous works of street art. But the beating heart of urban art is FARM Cultural Park in Favara, a regeneration project launched in 2010 that has transformed seven courtyards in the town center into one of the most famous contemporary art galleries in the world.

In Agrigento, in Via Vallicaldi and the Fontanelle district, murals and school workshops enliven the city walls, making them inclusive and participatory.

Finally, in Licata, among the narrow streets of the Marina district, there are works such as Vlady‘s portrait of Rosa Balistreri, Gubrin’s Madonna Matrioska, and Pao’s octopus “U purpu licatisi”: a visual tribute to the strength and character of the most authentic Sicily.
