Rock Culture and Chalcidian Archaeology in Eastern Sicily

Detail

The tour begins with a visit to the Sant’Antonio Quarry in Melilli, an enormous, enclosed quarry used since ancient times for extracting white stone.

It continues with a visit to the Necropolis of Pantalica (Unesco World Heritage Site), a vast natural archaeological area whose origins date back even before the Greek colonization, with the first human traces dating back to the earliest settlements of Homo Sapiens.

After leaving the Necropolis, lunch is in Sortino with typical Sortino pizzoli.

Then, the tour continues to Lentini with a visit to the Rupestrian Church of the Crucifix (a real cave carved into the rock where you can admire the splendid recently restored frescoes) and the Archaeological Museum with artifacts from one of the first Greek colonies in Sicily and the famous Kouros of Leontinoi, one of the most important statues in Greek archaeology.

At the end of the tour, there is a tasting of the traditional and multi-awarded Bread of Lentini and the Cudduruni of Lentini, jewels of the local gastronomic culture.
