For more than five hundred years in Messina excitement and fascination on the day of the Assumption of Mary into heaven.
The festivities that take place in Messina on August 15 in honor of Our Lady of the Assumption are preceded by a singular and scenic procession, repeated for five days in a row, whose protagonists are two colossal statues of Giants on horseback, the Messina-born Mata and Grifone, the Moor conqueror of the city.
Equally scenic is the procession of the Assumption with the Vara, a grandiose machine symbolizing the Assumption into heaven of the Virgin Mary, amid a crowd of angels. The departure of the Vara has been taking place since 1535 from Castronovo Square.
