The Face of God. The Face of Man
Detail
From 19 March to 19 May 2026, the Church of San Lorenzo in Agrigento, home to the Mudia Exhibition Centre, is hosting the exhibition “The Face of God. The Face of Man”, a journey through art, faith and devotion.
The exhibition is divided into five thematic areas – Revelation, Gift, Journey, Waiting, Resurrection – offering a journey through Christian spirituality via the forms of art. The works, created between the 17th and 19th centuries and originating from various communities within the Diocese of Agrigento, bear witness to a profound devotional tradition linked to liturgical life and popular piety.
Paintings by local artists, such as Domenico Provenzani, Father Fedele da Sambuca, Tommaso Rossi and Federico Panepinto, recount the various periods of local figurative art, revealing a heritage that intertwines memory, identity and artistic languages.
The spiritual centrepiece of the exhibition is the replica of the Holy Shroud housed in Agrigento Cathedral, which invites visitors to engage in intimate and contemplative reflection. The accompaniment of Gregorian chants helps to create a contemplative atmosphere, in which the aesthetic experience merges with the meditative dimension.
The exhibition offers an opportunity to rediscover the value of faith and the cultural and spiritual heritage of the region, through a profound dialogue between past and present.
Opening hours: Monday to Thursday 9.00–19.00; Friday and Saturday 9.00–21.30. Free admission.
