Vulcana
Description
From July 10 to 13, 2025, the island of Stromboli will host the first edition of VULCANA, a wide-ranging artistic event that turns the island into a stage for contemporary creativity. Curated by Luca Lo Pinto and founded by Manuela Morandi, the project gathers 21 Italian and international artists engaging with the landscape and spirit of the island.
VULCANA is a performative festival composed of screenings, concerts, performances, installations, and artworks unfolding like a musical score, with space for improvisation and interaction with Stromboli’s volcanic nature and its summer inhabitants.
Featured artists include Tony Cokes, exploring sound, words, and image; Hanne Lippard, who works with voice and performance; Emiliano Maggi with his sculptural soundscapes; and the duo Beatrice Gibson & Nick Gordon, alongside VEGA, Pauline Curnier-Jardin, John Menick, Jonathan Monk, and many others. Each artist was invited to create new works in resonance with the environment, often after a short residency.
Sound and music will play a central role with live performances by VIPRA, Industria Indipendente with musician KUKII, Napoli Segreta, and listening sessions from experimental label Villa Lontana Records. The visual identity of the festival was created by Nathalie Du Pasquier, blending art, design, and color.
VULCANA will animate rarely accessed spaces in Stromboli: the amphitheater overlooking Strombolicchio, the Canonica of San Bartolo Church, Casa Carrubo (once home to artist Giovanni Anselmo), and residences of the Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation and TAGLI.
This free-entry event creates an alternative cultural itinerary to traditional tourism, offering an immersive experience in the island’s raw and creative soul. VULCANA marks the birth of a new kind of festival: a temporary artistic community using Stromboli as a living laboratory of experimentation, dialogue, and inspiration.
