The Leopard Festival 2026
Detail
From 31 July to 2 August 2026, Santa Margherita di Belìce will host the Festival del Gattopardo, a cultural event celebrating the literary legacy of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa through talks, performances, music, food and wine, and the prestigious Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa International Literary Prize. The events take place within the historic Palazzo Filangeri-Cutò, identified as the ‘Donnafugata’ from the famous novel The Leopard.
The festival opens on 31 July with the Officina del Racconto, a project dedicated to young people offering workshops and activities centred on creative writing and storytelling, providing opportunities for discussion and training for new generations of readers and authors.
The main event is scheduled for Saturday 1 August, when the award ceremony for the 21st edition of the Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa International Literary Prize will take place. This internationally recognised award is presented annually to a living author, whether Italian or foreign, whose work addresses themes related to culture, Euro-Mediterranean identity and the encounter between peoples and cultures. Over the years, the prize has been awarded to leading figures in world literature, including several Nobel laureates.
On 2 August, the festival concludes with *La Cucina del Gattopardo*, an event dedicated to the flavours and traditions of south-western Sicily, inspired by the atmosphere of the novel. Cooking demonstrations, tastings and culinary tales showcase the region’s traditional produce, such as ancient grains, olive oil, wine, prickly pears, Vastedda della Valle del Belìce PDO and traditional desserts, with dishes that evoke iconic creations such as the famous Timballo del Principe and the Trionfo di Gola.
Alongside the main events, the Gattopardo Festival features book launches, meetings with authors, musical performances and sessions dedicated to exploring the cultural heritage of the Sicane region. An event that brings together literature, history, music and local traditions, transforming Santa Margherita di Belìce into a meeting place where contemporary culture and the region’s heritage converge.
