The Illuminated Staircase in Caltagirone

The traditional ‘Scala Illuminata’ returns to Caltagirone – the event that lights up the Santa Maria del Monte Staircase every summer as part of the celebrations in honour of St James, the town’s patron saint.

On 24 and 25 July 2026, the 142 steps of the famous staircase will be illuminated by thousands of lanterns arranged in a distinctive pattern, creating a dazzling display that showcases one of Caltagirone’s most iconic landmarks.

The tradition of the ‘Scala Illuminata’ has its roots in popular devotion and the town’s connection with the art of ceramics: an event that draws visitors every year to the heart of the historic centre, amidst the Baroque architecture of the Val di Noto, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In recent years, the staircase has also been illuminated on 14 and 15 August, during the celebrations dedicated to Maria Santissima del Ponte, extending the period during the Caltagirone summer when visitors can admire the famous illuminated staircase.
