Muzzuni Festival 2026

Detail

From 20 to 24 June 2026, Alcara Li Fusi, in the heart of the Nebrodi Mountains, celebrates the Muzzuni Festival, considered one of Italy’s oldest folk festivals. This annual event preserves and renews a heritage of rituals, symbols and traditions linked to the fertility of the land, the summer solstice and the collective memory of the local community.

The event has its roots in ancient agrarian cults of pagan origin and coincides with the feast day of St John the Baptist, creating a fascinating interweaving of Christian spirituality and folk rituals. The undisputed star of the festival is the Muzzuni, a neckless jug decorated with precious fabrics, family heirlooms, ears of wheat and flowers – a symbol of prosperity, abundance and rebirth.

The celebrations kick off at the weekend of 20 and 21 June with ‘Aspettando il Muzzuni’ (Waiting for the Muzzuni), a programme of events dedicated to promoting the local area, featuring tastings of traditional produce and local wines, musical performances and cultural initiatives taking place throughout the historic centre. One of the highlights is the international gathering of folk groups, featuring delegations from Italy and abroad, which transforms the village into a meeting place for diverse folk traditions.

On 24 June, the day of the festival, Alcara Li Fusi gets into the thick of the celebrations with Holy Mass and the procession dedicated to St John the Baptist, followed by a re-enactment of the ancient Muzzuni rituals. As evening falls, the village’s neighbourhoods come alive with the setting up of the characteristic little altars, decorated with woven rugs, ears of wheat, carnations and lavender. Around the Muzzuni, traditional polyphonic songs – passed down orally through the generations – are sung, accompanying the festivities throughout the night. From 10 pm onwards, travelling musical and folk groups wind their way through the village streets, whilst residents and visitors take part in the evocative ritual of the ‘comparatico’, an ancient symbolic gesture of brotherhood and friendship that represents one of the event’s most authentic aspects.

The Muzzuni Festival thus offers an immersion in Sicily’s deepest-rooted traditions, encompassing folklore, music, spirituality and rural culture. A unique event that transforms Alcara Li Fusi into a grand stage for identity and participation, allowing visitors to discover one of the most fascinating and enduring rituals of Sicily’s folk heritage.
