From Tauromenion to Tauromenium

Detail

The major archaeological and multimedia exhibition entitled “From Tauromenion to Tauromenium. The Invisible City between History and Archaeology” takes place at Palazzo Ciampoli in Taormina from 7 August to 30 November 2024, with visits available daily from 10 am to 7 pm.

A moment particularly awaited by the local community was the return to Taormina of the famous marble statue of the “Priestess of Isis”, found in 1867 near the church of San Pancrazio and transferred to the Salinas Museum in Palermo in 1868. The statue had not been in Taormina since 2001, when it was displayed in an exhibition organised by the Messina Superintendency and the Municipality of Taormina in Badia Vecchia.

There are six thematic sections in the exhibition, which is spread over the two floors of Palazzo Ciampoli. It starts with the traces of the Sicilian populations documented by the necropolis of Cocolonazzo: the origins, living and dwelling in Tauromenion/ium: the houses of men; public buildings, places of the sacred, necropolis, from the theatre to the amphitheatre, collecting. While an archaeological map, 3D reconstructions and a multimedia and immersive apparatus (video and video mapping) will make visitors relive the experience of wandering through the actual alleys and inside the ancient city.
