Feast of St George in Ragusa

Detail

The Feast of St George of Ragusa is a festivity that is deeply felt by the citizens of Ragusa and, of all religious festivals, it is the one with the most popular and folkloristic features.

On Friday and Saturday there are processions of St George and the Holy Ark. On Sunday, after mass, the band crosses Ragusa Ibla playing while waiting for the midday fireworks, the great fireworks display. In the afternoon, the two municipal bands accompanied by flag-wavers perform through the streets of the city, but everyone waits for St George to come out. In the evening, after the solemn mass, the procession can start: St George’s exit is greeted by thousands of citizens and visitors throwing balloons and fireworks as they wait for the “ballad of the saint”.
