Cavagrande del Cassibile Nature Reserve

Dettaglio

The Cavagrande del Cassibile Nature Reserve is one of the most spectacular landscapes in south-eastern Sicily. Situated between the municipalities of Avola, Noto and Syracuse, the reserve is characterised by a deep canyon carved out over millennia by the River Cassibile, which has shaped a system of natural terraces, imposing rock faces and picturesque freshwater lakes.

From the panoramic viewpoints, visitors can admire a vast, wild valley, with limestone cliffs reaching heights of up to 300 metres. The footpaths leading down to the bottom of the gorge allow visitors to immerse themselves in an unspoilt environment, where the silence is broken only by the sound of water flowing between the rocks. The natural pools, known as ‘urvi’, are one of the reserve’s most iconic features and offer scenes of great charm in every season.

In addition to its natural riches, the area is home to important archaeological remains, including rock-cut necropolises and man-made caves dating back to protohistoric times. Cavagrande is an ideal destination for lovers of trekking, hiking and nature photography.

A landscape where nature, history and scenery blend together to create one of the most evocative settings in the Iblei Mountains.
