Piazza del Duomo and Cathedral of Sant’Agata
Detail
Piazza del Duomo is the symbolic center of Catania, a place that embodies the Baroque soul of the city and its deep connection with Sant’Agata, its beloved patron saint. Here stands the Cathedral of Sant’Agata, built in the 11th century and rebuilt several times after eruptions and earthquakes, testifying to the strength and resilience of Catania. The white and gray stone façade, designed by Vaccarini, is one of the finest examples of Sicilian Baroque, elegant and spectacular.
Inside the cathedral are the relics of Saint Agatha, a destination for pilgrims during the famous festival on February 5. The side chapels, funerary monuments, and tomb of the famous composer Vincenzo Bellini make a visit here a journey through faith, art, and history.
The square is also home to the famous Elephant Fountain, symbol of the city: an obelisk supported by a volcanic statue of an elephant, affectionately known as u Liotru, protagonist of local myths and legends. Walking in this square means experiencing the essence of Catania: its monumental Baroque, its dynamism, and its deep cultural identity.
