Linosa Nature Reserve

Detail

The Linosa Nature Reserve is part of the larger Linosa and Lampione Islands Nature Reserve, a protected area established in 2000 in the municipality of Lampedusa e Linosa, in the province of Agrigento, with the aim of preserving the unique natural ecosystems of the Pelagie Islands.

An extraordinary volcanic landscape

Linosa is an island of volcanic origin, formed by four ancient craters—Monte Rosso, Monte Vulcano, Monte Bandiera, and Monte Nero—which shape a landscape of dark hills, cliffs overlooking the sea, and hidden coves such as Cala Pozzolana di Ponente. This distinctive geological substrate contributes to the variety of natural habitats found in the reserve, making it a particularly interesting place for geologists, hikers, and nature lovers.

Rich and unique flora

The reserve protects a highly diverse flora, enriched by mosses, lichens, and numerous endemic species that thrive on volcanic soils. Among the plant species are typical Mediterranean scrub plants along with endemic species such as Erodium neuradifolium var. linosae and Limonium algusae, which are widespread in the rocky areas of the island.

Fauna and birdlife of the Linosa Nature Reserve

Linosa’s nature is equally important for wildlife: the island is home to colonies of large seabirds such as the Cory’s shearwater (Calonectris diomedea), which is one of the reserve’s main ornithological attractions. The coastal beaches, such as those surrounding the island, are regular nesting sites for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), a vulnerable species protected at international level. The terrestrial fauna also includes interesting species, such as endemic lizards and rabbits that inhabit the interior of the island.

Access and environmental protection

The reserve, with a total area of approximately 267 hectares, is managed by the Department of Rural and Territorial Development of the Sicilian Region as part of the regional protected areas system. The area is also included in the European Natura 2000 network as a Special Protection Area (SPA) and Site of Community Importance (SCI) to ensure the protection of its natural habitats and species.

A visitor experience

The Linosa Nature Reserve invites visitors to explore scenic trails, admire the island’s wild nature, and observe the rich flora and fauna up close. It is an ideal place for hiking, nature photography, bird watching, and observing the clear sea that surrounds the island..
