Cava d’Ispica
Details
Cava d’Ispica is one of the most extraordinary natural and archaeological sites in southeastern Sicily. It extends for about 13 kilometers between the territories of Ispica and Ispica, forming a deep valley carved out over thousands of years by the Pernamazzoni stream, a tributary of the Ispica River. It is a place where nature, history, and spirituality coexist in a landscape of rare beauty.
The rocky walls of the quarry contain necropolises, cave dwellings, Byzantine oratories, and water mills, evidence of uninterrupted human presence from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages. Among the most fascinating sites are the Grotta della Larderia, the rock church of Santa Maria, and the Parco Forza, an archaeological area that reveals the remains of an ancient fortified settlement.
Walking along the paths that cross the valley, you can admire spectacular views, immersed in the silence and lush vegetation of the Iblei mountains. Cava d’Ispica is an ideal destination in every season for those who love trekking, nature photography, and discovering the most ancient roots of Sicily.
