Teatro Stabile of Catania

Details

The Teatro Stabile of Catania is one of the largest artistic-cultural institutions in Sicily. It currently has two halls: the historic “Sala Verga” and the more recent “Sala Futura.” Its rich annual program offers a very wide choice, including self-produced shows of highly artistic level.

The Teatro Stabile of Catania was founded on December 3, 1958, in the small hall of the “Angelo Musco” Theater, under the name “Ente Teatro di Sicilia.” In 1969 the “Teatro delle Muse” was built in Cibali, then destroyed by a fire, rebuilt in the 1980s and named after Giovanni Verga. Today it constitutes the main and best-known branch of the Teatro Stabile of Catania.

After Mario Giusti, the theater has been directed by Pippo Baudo, Filippo Amoroso, Orazio Torrisi, and Giuseppe Dipasquale. Catanese productions have toured throughout Italy and abroad (United States, England, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Canada, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Switzerland and many other countries). While favoring Sicilian authors, the productions range from Russian to American theater, without neglecting contemporary authors.
