Holy Week in Enna
Detail
In Enna, Easter celebrations open on Palm Sunday and continue until the Sunday in Albis, the Sunday after Easter. On these days, the 15 confraternities of Enna stage rites that date back to the 15th-17th centuries, the period of Spanish rule.
Noteworthy events are Palm Sunday, when the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem is depicted, and the afternoon of Holy Friday when all the hooded confraternities reach the cathedral from where the procession of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows depart.
On Easter Sunday, the “‘a Paci” ceremony takes place, when, in the cathedral square, the statues of the risen Christ and the Madonna meet and are brought inside the church, where they remain exposed to the veneration of the faithful for a week.
