Museum of Greek Shipwrecks
Detail
Opened in February 2026, the Museum of Greek Shipwrecks in Gela (CL) is a fascinating destination for lovers of archaeology and ancient seafaring, situated within the Bosco Littorio Archaeological Area. The Museum of Greek Shipwrecks displays the remains of three Greek ships discovered together with their original cargo.
It was 1988 when the first of the three ships was discovered on the seabed of the Gulf of Gela, and the question of how to display it properly immediately arose. Thus was born the new Museum of Greek Shipwrecks within the Bosco Littorio, a significant site due to the presence of an archaic emporium at the mouth of the River Gela, where the port of the ancient Greek city, where the ships moored, was likely also situated.
Designed by architect Ettore Di Mauro, the current museum covers an exhibition area of 4,000 m², with a large wooden roof shaped like an upturned hull. At the centre of the main hall stands the “Gela I” wreck, around which are arranged display cases containing the most significant finds from the cargo: wine and oil amphorae, Attic pottery, figurative vases, oil lamps, cups, bowls and various everyday objects used on board, including a terracotta flute and a devotional set featuring a female figurine. Completing the space is an immersive room with 3D headsets, allowing visitors to experience a virtual sea voyage.
