Isola di Lampedusa Nature Reserve

Dettaglio

The “Isola di Lampedusa” Nature Reserve is a protected natural area located on the southern coast of the island of Lampedusa, part of the municipality of Lampedusa and Linosa, in the province of Agrigento. It was established in the 1990s by the Sicilian Region with the aim of protecting the natural environment and the unique flora and fauna of this corner of the Mediterranean.

The Lampedusa Island Nature Reserve covers an area of approximately 360–370 hectares and includes a territory stretching from Vallone dell’Acqua in the west to Cala Greca in the east, also including Rabbit Island and part of the sea in front of it.

Biodiversity and landscape

The Reserve is home to rare and endangered species, both animal and plant. Among the animals found here are the Eleonora’s falcon, the tufted duck, various species of snakes, and migratory birds. The flora includes exclusive Mediterranean plants, such as Caralluma europea and Centaurea acaulis, species that grow almost exclusively here in Italy.

The area is characterized by deep geological incisions in the limestone plateaus, valleys that flow into small coves, and striking cliffs that create a natural landscape of great aesthetic and scientific value.

Protection of sea turtles

One of the most well-known aspects of the reserve is the protection of the Caretta caretta sea turtle, which returns every year to lay its eggs on the protected beaches of the reserve, such as those on Isola dei Conigli. In order to preserve nesting habitats, access to the most sensitive coastal areas is regulated and restricted, especially during the high season.

Management and use

The area is managed by Legambiente Sicilia in collaboration with the Sicilian Region. Visits are organized in such a way as to reconcile responsible tourism with conservation: it is forbidden to disturb the fauna, pick plants, or stray from the marked paths, and in the summer months, access to the beach on Isola dei Conigli requires a reservation due to limited numbers.
