Open Paths – Way of St James

Detail

The Sicilian hinterland, the one less travelled by tourists, is a treasure trove of stories that can be discovered with a little patience by all those who decide to travel to certain places. The one on Sunday 14 April is not a simple trek but rather a journey within oneself.

This is a 6-kilometre-long loop hike that is part of the third stage of the Way of St James, from the Domus Hospitalis of the Borgo di San Giacomo to Piazza Armerina, the place where the Knights of Tau of Altopascio welcomed pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land. We will then cross the Rossomanno Grottascura Bellia Oriented Reserve, rich in eucalyptus, conifers and a wood that provides protection from the sun and guarantees a pleasant experience protected from the heat of the Sicilian sun until we reach the Madonna del Cammino, a small chapel that gives spiritual support to all those who visit the wood to return. The return to Piazza Armerina will give the opportunity to visit this splendid municipality, famous and world-renowned for the mosaics of the Villa Romana del Casale and that preserves wonders in its baroque historic centre, such as the Duomo or the Palazzo Trigona and the Castello Aragonese.
