In the town centre, we recognise the <strong>\u2018Vigata\u2019<\/strong> brought to life by the Master\u2019s pen \u2013 the most famous town in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitsicily.info\/itinerario\/viaggio-nei-luoghi-di-montalbano-serie-tv\/\">Inspector Montalbano<\/a> series: <strong>Marina di Girgenti<\/strong>, where the majestic <strong>Tower of Charles V<\/strong> stands out. It was here that the events of *The Forgotten Massacre*, another of his novels, took place, and where <strong>Luigi Pirandello<\/strong> spent his childhood.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AGRIGENTO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mentioning <strong>Pirandello<\/strong> takes us straight to the rich territory of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitsicily.info\/localita\/agrigento\/\">Agrigento<\/a>, where myth, history, archaeology and literature intertwine: from the legendary <strong>Contrada Caos<\/strong>, home to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavalledeitempli.it\/itinerari\/agrigento\/casa-museo-pirandello\/\">birthplace<\/a>, to the historic centre of <strong>Girgenti<\/strong>, where one expects to encounter at any moment the memorable characters who populate his works, perhaps whilst visiting the <strong>Lucchesiana Library<\/strong>, the <strong>Church of Itria<\/strong> (where the writer married Antonietta Portulano), his family home, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitsicily.info\/attrazione\/teatro-pirandello-agrigento\/\">\u2018Pirandello\u2019 Theatre<\/a> and all the recognisable scenes amongst the alleyways, squares and courtyards that serve as literary backdrops. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitsicily.info\/cattedrale-di-agrigento\/\">Cathedral of San Gerlando<\/a>, on the other hand, is the setting for the <strong>\u2018Montelusa\u2019<\/strong> imagined by <strong>Pirandello<\/strong> and later revisited by <strong>Camilleri<\/strong>, and for a crucial scene in <strong>The Leopard by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa<\/strong>, which takes place at the top of the bell tower.<\/p>\n<p>Before continuing along the <strong>Writers\u2019 Trail<\/strong>, the route veers off towards the legendary <strong>Kolymbethra Garden<\/strong>, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitsicily.info\/attrazione\/sicilia-patrimonio-unesco\/\">Valley of the Temples<\/a>. Situated between the <strong>Temple of the Dioscuri<\/strong> and the <strong>Temple of Vulcan<\/strong>, this garden of Greek origin is mentioned by <strong>Pirandello<\/strong> in a descriptive passage. Finally, taking the turn-off for <strong>Rupe Atenea<\/strong>, you can follow the path leading to <strong>Baron Agnello<\/strong>\u2019s country residence, amidst granaries, olive groves and fields that evoke the childhood haunts of <strong>Simonetta Agnello Hornby<\/strong> and the novel Un filo d\u2019olio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PALMA DI MONTECHIARO (AG)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To discover one of the sources of inspiration for <strong>The Leopard<\/strong> and enjoy a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitsicily.info\/en\/category\/categorie-en\/sapori-en\/\">sweet treat<\/a>, you need to head to <strong>Palma di Montechiaro<\/strong> and visit the marvellous <strong>Benedictine Monastery<\/strong>, where the cloistered nuns bake the famous almond biscuits, also known as <strong>\u2018Ricci del Gattopardo\u2019<\/strong> and made famous worldwide by the novel. Even today, through the sturdy bars of the ancient \u2018foundling wheel\u2019, the nuns hand out these sweet treats to anyone who asks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAVARA (AG)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Staying a little longer in the Agrigento hinterland, the <strong>Writers\u2019 Route<\/strong> offers the chance to discover the charm of the more inland villages, which are undergoing innovative urban regeneration projects and have therefore become places of great interest. This is the case with <strong>Favara<\/strong>, the birthplace of the writer <strong>Antonio Russello<\/strong>, whose most run-down neighbourhoods have been transformed into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitsicily.info\/farm-cultural-park-di-favara-2\/\">Farm Cultural Park<\/a>: an unmissable open-air museum of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitsicily.info\/itinerario\/arte-moderna\/\">contemporary art<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RACALMUTO (AG)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The itinerary continues towards <strong>Racalmuto<\/strong> to pay homage to its most illustrious son, <strong>Leonardo Sciascia<\/strong>, along the main street, with his customary cigarette between his fingers: at least that is how he is depicted in the monument designed by <strong>Giuseppe Agnello<\/strong>. Among the town\u2019s many places of interest, from the <strong>Chiaramontano Castle<\/strong> to the <strong>Regina Margherita Theatre<\/strong>, the <strong>Leonardo Sciascia Foundation<\/strong> stands out: a former power station, elegantly restored, which has become a landmark for the writer\u2019s fans and scholars. Finally, just outside the town centre, the <strong>Sican tombs<\/strong> known as the <strong>Grotte di Fra Diego La Matina<\/strong> \u2013 mentioned by <strong>Sciascia<\/strong> in his novel <em><strong>Morte dell\u2019inquisitore<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 are easily reached, situated near the countryside where he loved to retreat to devote himself to writing and meet friends.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MONTEDORO (CL)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Part of the <strong>Caltanissetta<\/strong> area, the municipality of <strong>Montedoro<\/strong> is the birthplace of <strong>Angelo Petyx and Louise Hamilton Caico<\/strong>, two important figures in the Sicilian literary scene who feature along the <strong>Writers\u2019 Route<\/strong>. Petyx (Montedoro 1912\u20131997) was a writer, poet, anti-fascist and partisan, best known for his novel The Occupied Mine, which refers to the local <strong>Nadurello Mine<\/strong>, adjacent to the <strong>Zolfara Museum<\/strong> (dedicated to him); Caico (Nice, 1861\u20131927), on the other hand, was an Anglo-Irish noblewoman who lived in the village for over sixteen years, in what is now the <strong>House-Museum<\/strong>; she was the author of *Sicilian Ways and Days* and left behind a substantial photographic archive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CALTANISSETTA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As we reach the end of the <strong>Writers\u2019 Trail<\/strong>, it leads us to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitsicily.info\/localita\/caltanissetta\/\">Caltanissetta<\/a>, described as <strong>\u2018Little Athens\u2019<\/strong> by <strong>Sciascia<\/strong> himself. A veritable cultural hotbed, the city is the birthplace of figures of the calibre of <strong>Piermaria Rosso di San Secondo<\/strong>, a great playwright and author of Marionette, che passione!. His <strong>birthplace<\/strong> is located in the <strong>Santa Lucia district<\/strong>.
