From Girgenti to Monaco. From Munich to Agrigento. The return of the Panitteri ciantro vases to Agrigento
Dettaglio
From 18 December 2024 to 18 May 2025, the ‘Pietro Griffo’ Museum in Agrigento, within the Archaeological Park of the Valley of the Temples, will host an extraordinary exhibition marking the return, after two hundred years, of ten ancient Greek vases from Munich. These masterpieces from the 6th and 5th centuries B.C., examples of refined Attic vase painting with black and red figures, are part of the famous Panitteri Collection, sold in 1824 by the cyanthropist Giuseppe Panitteri to Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria.
The exhibition, entitled ‘From Girgenti to Munich. From Munich to Agrigento. The return of the Cyantro Panitteri vases’, interweaves Greek myths with Western art and literature, offering visitors a journey through the history and culture of ancient Greece. The vases, on loan from the Staatliche Antikensammlungen in Munich, are displayed in the museum’s Lizzi Auditorium.
This event, promoted by the Sicilian Region and the Archaeological Park of the Valley of the Temples, officially opens the celebrations of Agrigento Italian Capital of Culture 2025, being one of the initiatives that will bring the city of Pirandello to the centre of international attention for twelve months.
An unmissable opportunity to discover the cultural and historical value of the Panitteri collection, symbol of a cultural dialogue between Italy and Germany.
The exhibition can be visited every day from 9 am to 7 pm. Admission is included in the Griffo Museum ticket.
